about

The Boilermaker Jazz Band celebrates it’s 30th year with this NEW release! A fixture on the swing dancing scene, and at music festivals and concert series across the nation and the globe, we are pleased to present this new collection of jumpin’ riffs and swingin’ love songs. Our regular band members are augmented by world renowned swing pianist Gordon Webster.

During the wonderful but all too short time known as the Swing Era, band leaders, jazz musicians, and singers were superstars. They played from coast to coast, filling packed ballrooms with great music.

While every band had its own signature sound and repertoire, each band had a few things in common. Great instrumentalists to play the charts just the way the band was supposed to sound, talented jazz soloists to liven up each arrangement, and- as everyone loves to be told a story in song- a top vocalist was a must. Most importantly, the band had to Swing! Whether playing a jazz riff or a sentimental love song… the music absolutely had to swing.

All of the bands had a book of great tunes for people to dance and listen to. Often filling that book was a collection of catchy riffs- songs with snippets of repeated melody that get stuck in your head and are great vehicles for jazz improvisation. Another requirement was wonderful vocal numbers- usually about love- that were written by various accomplished composers whose works contributed to the Great American Songbook.

This recording brings to life those two seminal categories of swing music performed in the unique style of the Boilermaker Jazz Band. You’ll hear riffs made famous by some of the greats such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Erskine Hawkins, and Pittsburgh’s own Billy Ekstine. And love songs originally performed by vocal stars Helen Forrest, Billie Holiday, Jo Stafford and even Rudy Vallee.

From the Swing Era to today, dancers- and listeners too- need to feel that great swing beat. It’s a must. Whether you intend to cut a rug, or just sit back and listen, we hope you enjoy our versions of these timeless tunes- and Love the Rhythm in a Riff as much as we do!
